He said the objective of celebrating the occasion is to recall, remember and emulate the scholarly merit, dedication, high social values, morality and righteousness, which former President of India, Bharat Ratna Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan possessed, preached and practised.

The governor, in his message said that, from time immemorial, India had the Gurukula (teacher’s extended family) system of education, which was holistic and encompassed knowledge, health, hygiene, sanitation and nationalism training. In the absence of reading and writing material, Gurukula education was based on Shruti (listening) and Smriti (remembering). It entailed great sincerity of effort and involvement of the teachers to teach and extreme hard work on the part of students to learn.

“Despite the absence of printing facility, it was entirely due to teachers’ greatness that our ancient learning system developed extremely well and in due course of time we had famous universities, like Nalanda and Taxila, where the students from far off countries came to study,” the governor said. He further said that the times have now changed. The teachers have plethora of teaching and training aids to impart education. The society, therefore, now expects our teachers to turn out highly meritorious batches of students from their alma mater.
