Manipur Assam: POCSO accused convicted to life imprisonment in Bongaigaon

Imphal: A fast track court in Manipur awarded 25-year rigorous imprisonment to a 61-year-old tribal for sexually assaulting two minor girls under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

Binny Ngangom, the Special Judge Fast Track Special Court of Ukhrul district, Manipur on Tuesday convicted K Ramyo Shimrei (61) of Lunghar Village in Ukhrul district for 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping two minors during a period from July 27, 2018, to August 2, 2018.

The incidents happened in the Ukhrul district, according to the dossier of the court.

On the same court on April 24, 2024, convicted K Ramyo Shimrei under Section 5[I][m] r/w Sec. 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012 for committing the crime of sexual assault of two minor girls.

The convict was produced before the court through video conferencing during the hearing of the sentencing.

The defence counsel prayed to the judge to lessen the punishment even though the convict had made a mistake while he was drunk.

Moreover, he is a poor old man and has already spent six years in judicial custody.

The special judge after hearing the submissions of the Special Public Prosecutor and the defence counsel sentenced the rape convict to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.
