Guwahati city police registered 417 cases of drunken driving on the eve of New Year’s Day during  8.30 pm to 4.00 am.

Dispur Division of the city police registered maximum number of 176 cases followed by 96 in Chandmari Division, 72 in Jalukbari Division and 69 in Panbazar Division. The Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of Assam Police, Rajib Saikia informed that there was, however, no major road accident reported during the night.

The city police personnel equipped with alcometers (breath analysers) set up checked points at various road junctions as well as main roads in the night to keep a check on drunken driving.

It was seen that because of the police action to discipline drivers on the New Year’s Day night, there were comparatively less number of vehicles plying on city roads late last night especially rash-driving bikers were off the road much to the relief of the commuters.

The action of the city police resulted in registering almost no major incident of road mishap in the city on the New Year’s Day night, a senior police official said.

It may be mentioned that if a breath analyser detects that a driver’s blood alcohol level exceeds 30 mg/100 ml, he/she is liable to be punished.
