Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday said the state government has constructed 34 lakhs of toilets across Assam in three years.
Sonowal said the Assam government started constructing toilets in response to the clarion call made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sonowal said, “Following Modi ji’s clarion call, we have constructed 34 lakhs toilets across Assam in 3 years.”
“This has enabled us to give a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi while alleviating the social status of many across the state,” the CM said.

Paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary at Palashbari in Kamrup (Rural) district, Chief minister Sonowal said the Prime Minister, since assuming office in 2014 has undertaken several initiatives inspired by Bapu’s ideals of Swacchata and building a healthy society.
In this regard he said that due to people’s active participation, the Swacch Bharat Mission became a mass movement.
“Today is an important day for us as we celebrate the birth anniversary of Bapuji. His principles continue to be relevant even today,” the CM said.
“This is why PM Narendra Modi ji in his 1st ever Independence Day speech gave the clarion call for a Swachh Bharat,” the CM added.
Sonowal also called upon people to take active part in plantation, rain water harvesting for preserving the ecology. He also urged them to take forward the Fit India Movement in a bid to build a healthy society.
In the same programme at Palshbari, chief minister Sonowal on Wednesday inaugurated the LED High Mast Light installation scheme being implemented by urban development department covering all towns and cities of the state.
