Dhubri Police on Tuesday arrested three persons, including a couple from West Bengal, who have been running an NGO, for allegedly duping youths with promise of providing jobs in the NGO.
Dhubri Police said that they received a complaint from Somnath Banik, President of Dhubri Town Mondal Committee of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) claiming that a Kolkata-based NGO having its branch office in Dhubri had been collecting a sum of Rs 501 from the unemployed youths giving false promise of giving them jobs in their NGO.
Acting on the information, police rushed to the office of the NGO located on the second floor of a building (known as Peerless Building) near Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua Playground of Dhubri town and arrested three of its employees.
The two out of the three accused have been identified as Debasish Banik, son of late Bijen Banik and Tina Chakraborty Banik, wife of Debasish Banik, both are residents of Pochimgamini village under Berhampore Police Station of Murshidabad district of West Bengal while the third one has been identified as Anshuman Dutta, son of Arijit Dutta, a resident of Police Quarter at Ward No 2 of Dhubri town.
Jayanta Kr Das, Town Sub-Inspector-cum-Investigating Officer of the case said that a case bearing No 279/2018 U/S 120 (B)/417/420 of IPC has been registered against the alleged accused and further investigation is on.
In the primary investigation, it has been found that the accused have received money from a total 180 persons so far and most of the youth are women with false promise of giving them jobs in the NGO, police said.
The NGO – Kadamtala Rural Health Service Society – which is registered with West Bengal Government having its registered office at 69/3, Kaiborta Para Lane, Salkia, Howrah in West Bengal while its Rural Office is located at Kalikapota village under Usti Police Station of South 24 Pargana having its operational area in West Bengal only.
It is a matter of concern that without prior permission from Dhubri district authority, how this NGO could start its operational office in Dhubri, police said.
Meanwhile, soon heard about the arrest of accused persons, a number of victim girls of Dhubri town also assembled at Dhubri Police Station on Tuesday and demanded action against the accused persons. They alleged that they were duped by the employees of Kadamtala Rural Health Service Society and urged the police to get back the money paid to the NGO.
Atowar Rahaman, a victim said that he had been informed by his friends that recruitment would happen for the job for ‘motivation of women in health sector’ at a Kolkata based NGO and accordingly he went to register himself for the interview process.
“I was told to pay Rs 501 for registration at first stage and in return of it I would get a salary of Rs 5000 in the first few months and thereafter the salary would increase up to Rs 10000,” he said. “I have also been asked to bring at least 200 female members in order to join the NGO and only after that my salary would be enhanced,” Rahaman said in his statement before the police.
Dhubri Police produced all the accused before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dhubri and the CJM Court sent all of them to two-day police custody for further investigation.
