Arunachal Pradesh’s Nampong MLA Laisam Simai on Friday declared open the first edition of Capital Complex Inter-Club Badminton Championship at the MLA cottage badminton stadium in Itanagar.
In all 80 shuttlers representing 5 different badminton clubs of the Capital Complex have participated in the tournament.
While the winners will get the championship trophy along with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, the runners-up will receive Rs 60,000.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Simai, while encouraging the sportspersons to participate in such competitions said that “discipline should be the primary element of one’s life”.
“Through sports one can not only gain physical and mental fitness but also can earn bread and butter,” Simai said, while highlighting the reservation policy of the state government for meritorious sportspersons.
The MLA further said that chief minister Pema Khandu-led-government is focused and committed on providing ample opportunities and avenues for the deserving sportspersons.
Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA) secretary Bamang Tago congratulated the Capital Badminton Club (CBC) for coming up with a tournament that provides a platform for all the budding shuttlers.
Tago said the participants should not take the tournament lightly as the best performing team and individuals would get a direct entry into the Dorjee Khandu Memorial State Level Badminton Championship which would be held later this year.
Stressing on the importance of providing proper infrastructure, Tago announced that 8 new badminton courts would be soon established in the state.
CBC president Toko Chada said that the main motive of organizing the tournament was to encourage more people, particularly youngsters to take up sports, especially badminton and provide them with a stage to showcase their talent.
“We expect to see more participants in the next edition,” Chada said.
Organised by CBC under the aegis of ASBA, the finals of the championship would be played on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the day also saw the ASBA felicitate umpires Modi Nilling and Pema Ladon who recently completed the Badminton Association of India’s Grade II Examination held at Karnataka.
