108 films from across globe to be screened at Guwahati film fest

As many as 108 films from across the globe will be screened at the 2nd Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) to be held from October 25 to 31.

Organised by Jyoti Chitraban (Film Studio) Society on its premises and Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here, festival confirmed participation of films from more than 60 countries.

“The weeklong festival will witness international films from more than 60 countries, which is double the participation of countries from the preceding years. The theme of the festival this time is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). The registration of delegates for the festival begun on Sunday,” The Telegraph quoted Assam cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley.

The festival is organised with the support of the Assam government and in association with the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute.

“Altogether 108 films of approximately 50 languages will be showcased from more than 60 countries in the festival. Of these, around 10 languages films from India and around 40 languages films from international countries will be showcased,” said Pabitra Margherita, the chairman of Jyoti Chitraban.

Last year, 72 international films were screened.

“A short-film festival and a children’s film festival will also be organised here. The first GIFF organised last year here was a great success under the leadership of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. We urge all the film lovers to make the 2nd edition of GIFF a grand success,” said Doley.

“Apart from the online delegates’ registration that started today, interested people above 18 years can also register offline, through various cultural institutions in the city like Jyoti Chitraban from today and at Sankaradeva Kalakshetra and Rabindra Bhawan shortly. We will visit 50 schools of Guwahati and nearby areas, along with 50 colleges and universities of the Northeast, to involve the students and the teachers in the festival. The registration fees for students and mediapersons is Rs 150, whereas for others it is Rs 300,” said Margherita.

Thirty countries around the world will send delegates from for the festival. Around 100 special guests will attend. It will also have a film competition among the eight states of the Northeast.
