The centre has asked Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram to issue border pass to residents living within 16km of boundary line. The pass will only be given to the domiciles.

These four Northeastern states share an unfenced border with Myanmar. India and Myanmar share an unfenced border of 1,643 km, in Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Nagaland (215 km), Manipur (398 km) and Mizoram (510 km).

The Centre has also directed the state governments of these four states to enroll the border residents under Aadhaar as soon as possible.

Aung San Suu Kyi , Myanmar’s State Counseller is scheduled to be in the national capital during the Republic Day celebrations as Chief Guest. A formal agreement is expected to be signed between the two countries during her visit.

The decision of issuing border passes to nearby residents was made after India raised the issue of movement of extremists and smugglers freely across border.

The Union Cabinet had approved the agreement between India and Myanmar on land border crossing to enhance economic interaction between people of both countries.
