Beijing would provide hydrological information to India regarding the Brahmaputra River during the flood season. New Delhi and Beijing on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard in the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation at Qingdao in China.

The MoU was signed in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. China’s Ministry of Water Resources and India’s Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation signed the MoU.

“Met this year’s SCO host, President Xi Jinping this evening. We had detailed discussions on bilateral and global issues. Our talks will add further vigour to the India-China friendship,” Modi said.

India and China has signed two bilateral agreements in Beijing on the sidelines of the two day long Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The other MoU that was signed between the two countries is on the export of rice from India to China.

The second MoU was signed between China’s General Administration of Customs and India’s Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare. Under the agreement, the 2006 Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for exporting rice from India to China has been amended to include the export of non-Basmati varieties of rice from India.

“Following Prime Minister’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, two MoUs were signed – Sharing hydrological information of Brahmaputra river by China to India and amendment of protocol on phytosanitary requirements for exporting rice from India to China to include non-Basmati rice,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

A high level official delegation has accompanied Modi to the SCO summit. India, China, and Uzbekistan together form a part of the SCO apart from Tajikistan, Pakistan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan.
