China has proposed abolition of two-term limit for its president and vice president on Sunday. Media reports originating from Beijing said China’s Communist Party cleared the way for President Xi Jinping to stay in power beyond 2023.
According to reports Communist Party has proposed to remove the expression that the president and vice-president “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms” from the country’s constitution.

The announcement comes ahead of three-day Central Committee plenum to be held on February 26 to discuss personnel and other proposed institutional changes to be tabled at the upcoming annual parliamentary gathering in Beijing.
The Central Committee also proposed inserting “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” into the constitution.
Constitutional reform needs to be approved by parliament. That is stacked with members chosen for their loyalty to the party, meaning the reform will not be blocked. It also planned to list the new super anti-graft body, the National Supervisory Commission, as a new state agency in the constitution.
