Guwahati: Days after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh, the countryโs interim government has formally requested her extradition from India, according to Touhid Hossein, Foreign Affairs Adviser of the interim administration, on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
Hossein made the remarks after the ICT announced a new hearing regarding Hasinaโs alleged involvement in cases linked to the enforced disappearance of political activists and critics during her 16-year tenure, which ended on August 5, 2024.
Speaking to reporters in his office, Hossein confirmed that a letter detailing the tribunalโs judgment, including Hasinaโs role in the crackdown on unarmed protesters in JulyโAugust 2024, was sent to India on November 21. โA letter has been sent day before yesterday,โ he said.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not yet responded.
The extradition request followed the ICTโs November 17, 2025, verdict, which sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death.
Bangladeshโs Ministry of Foreign Affairs had urged India to hand over both individuals promptly, citing obligations under the bilateral extradition treaty.
In response, Indiaโs Ministry of External Affairs said it had โnotedโ the verdict but did not indicate whether it would act on the request.
Reports suggest Indian authorities found issues with the trial, including that it was conducted in absentia despite delivering a death sentence.
ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, on Sunday, confirmed that a new hearing is scheduled to examine Hasinaโs alleged involvement in enforced disappearances. Z.I. Khan Panna has been appointed as her state defence lawyer, and several law-and-order officials may be summoned for the proceedings.
