Guwahati: Delhi Police detained YouTuber Dhruv Rathee at his home in Sector 56 of Gurugram on Saturday, ahead of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar, according to police sources.
Rathee had travelled to take part in the demonstration, which led to increased security measures in the national capital.
Police sources said around 50 personnel arrived at his Gurugram residence on Saturday morning and took him into custody.
A day earlier, Rathee had announced on X that he would attend the protest on Saturday. A vocal critic of the Narendra Modi government, Rathee returned to India from Germany earlier this week.
He also participated in the CJP demonstration in Bengaluru on October 8. Rathee has a substantial online following, with 19.2 million followers on Instagram, 3.3 million on X and 33 million subscribers on YouTube.
Delhi Police had refused permission for the proposed demonstration earlier in the week, citing security concerns and procedural requirements.
To prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, police have increased preventive detentions and stationed personnel at key locations.
Around 150 protesters have been detained by police at different locations across New Delhi so far.
