Guwahati: Phase three of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which was briefly postponed due to assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal last month, is scheduled to be implemented by the Election Commission in the upcoming days.
The nationwide voter list verification drive, which had been put on hold due to Assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal is set to move forward as the electoral process in these states and Union Territories concluded last month, the Election Commission said.
The revision exercise has been completed so far in 10 states and three Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Bihar, along with Puducherry, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Assam was covered under a separate revision process.
About 60 crore of the approximately 99 crore registered voters have already been covered by the exercise, according to data from the Election Commission. The next phase would cover the remaining 40 crore voters from 17 states and five Union Territories.
Election authorities in states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir were previously instructed by officials to finish preliminary work for the revision process.
Due to administrative and legal issues, the SIR exercise, which was first ordered last year, has undergone multiple changes to the schedule.
