Balasore: In response to violent clashes between two communities, a curfew has been imposed, and internet services suspended in the coastal town of Balasore, Odisha.

The violence erupted on June 17 over allegations of cow slaughter during a minority community’s religious celebration, police reported.

The confrontation began on June 17 afternoon in the communally-sensitive Patrapada area, when locals noticed red water in the drains, suspecting it was animal blood.

This suspicion led to a clash between the communities, involving stone-pelting that injured at least 15 people, including five policemen.

Authorities quickly imposed section 144 of the CrPC to prevent further gatherings.

The situation deteriorated late June 17 night as one community launched attacks on the other’s homes in the Golapokhari, Motiganj, and Cinema Chhak areas.

Assailants used stones, sticks, and glass bottles, setting fire to vehicles and vandalizing properties. Police resorted to blank firing to control the chaos.

Odisha chief minister Mohan Majhi has been in direct communication with the district collector, instructing that all necessary measures be taken to restore order.

“Peace and order shall not be allowed to be disturbed at all,” he asserted.

Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi and Sadar MLA Manas Kumar Dutt have appealed for calm, urging both communities to maintain peace.
