Guwahati: Gujarat is witnessing a fresh outbreak of Chandipura virus, with the infection claiming the lives of several children and prompting the state health authorities to intensify surveillance and preventive measures.
Recent reports indicate that more than 20 children have died after contracting the virus during the ongoing monsoon season. Health authorities have also reported dozens of confirmed infections among suspected cases, with children below 15 years accounting for the confirmed cases.
The outbreak has been reported from different parts of Gujarat, prompting health teams to step up monitoring and conduct investigations in affected areas. Authorities have increased surveillance to identify suspected cases at an early stage and strengthen efforts to contain transmission.
Chandipura virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected sandflies and is associated with acute encephalitis syndrome, particularly among children. The disease can progress rapidly, causing symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, severe headache, seizures, drowsiness and altered consciousness.
The Gujarat health department has intensified vector-control measures in areas reporting cases. Medical teams have also been conducting surveillance and collecting samples from suspected patients to establish the cause of illness and track the spread.
The Centre has deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to assist Gujarat authorities in investigating the outbreak and strengthening the response. Recent reports said 35 infections had been laboratory-confirmed from 184 suspected cases, with 22 deaths reported at that stage.
Chandipura virus has previously caused outbreaks in Gujarat, including a major outbreak in 2024. Official records from that outbreak showed the virus predominantly affected children and resulted in significant fatalities.
Health authorities have advised people in affected areas to take precautions against sandfly bites, maintain cleanliness around homes and seek immediate medical attention if children develop symptoms associated with acute encephalitis.
With the virus capable of causing severe illness within a short period, early detection, prompt hospitalisation and intensified vector-control measures remain key to reducing fatalities.
