Guwahati: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday, March 14, 2026, announced that activist Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) has been revoked immediately.
The MHA said the government is focused on maintaining peace, stability, and trust in Ladakh while fostering constructive dialogue with all communities. After careful review, authorities decided to end Wangchuk’s detention using the powers provided under the NSA.
The ministry added that the Union Government has been consulting local leaders and community representatives in Ladakh to address the region’s concerns and aspirations.
The decision follows comments from Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, who said he will avoid protests after his release but will continue to work for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh through dialogue.
Prior to the MHA announcement, Wangchuk, held at Jodhpur Central Jail, shared on social media on March 12 that he remains active in advocacy and seeks clarity, unity, and open discussion to address issues.
Wangchuk had been detained under the NSA on allegations of encouraging unrest by referring to protests in Nepal and Bangladesh. He was moved to Rajasthan during his confinement.
In a February 2026 Supreme Court hearing, the Centre opposed bail on health grounds, claiming his medical issues were exaggerated and noting he had been examined 24 times over five months and found to be in good health.
