Dimapur: The Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services Department on Thursday reiterated the total ban on forest fires in the state amid the ongoing dry and windy season.

In a circular, the directorate noted that despite the efforts of firefighters, village volunteers, district administrations, and the police, indiscriminate forest burning by hunters, campers, and miscreants continues to pose a threat.

The department highlighted that 188 forest fire incidents were reported in 2025, with Kohima district alone accounting for 91 cases.

The circular cautioned that the department cannot attend to all forest fires unless they pose an immediate threat to human settlements.

It also reminded the public that the state government, district administrations, and the forest department have issued notifications prohibiting forest fires due to their adverse effects on ecological balance.

The department urged citizens and village councils to take proactive measures to prevent such activities and to take action against violators to deter future incidents.
