Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: In a display of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s magnetic appeal, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) during a two-day campaign trail in Assam ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Sarma shared a video capturing the moment when a person with disabilities (Divyang) navigated a mud-laden ground to catch a glimpse of PM Modi in Nalbari, while security personnel observed from a distance.

However, there is a flip side to the story. What is more disturbing is that none of the security personnel extended any helping hand to the “Divyang” person, instead someone was recording the painstaking effort of the person trying to reach the rally.

There is no harm in showcasing the popularity of a Prime Minister and how thousands and lakhs of people thronging to witness PM Modi address a rally, but to share a tweet where a “divyang” person is left alone to walk the whole distance and sharing such a video by a state head really seems baffling.

Social media users have taken a potshot on the CM for sharing such a “distasteful” video, accusing him of attempting to bolster Modi’s charisma at the expense of a differently-abled person.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised about whether CM Sarma utilized the video as an election tactic to underscore Modi’s popularity, disregarding the well-being of a person with disabilities.
