Guwahati: The Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency in Assam holds significant historical importance, having been established in 1951 during India’s inaugural general elections.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the total electorate count in the Gauhati Lok Sabha Constituency stood at 2,181,319 during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, with 1,103,376 male voters, 1,077,865 female voters, and 78 voters identifying as the third gender. This constituency encompasses the Gauhati Municipal area, including the state capital Dispur.

The Gauhati parliamentary constituency comprises ten Assembly segments, namely Dudhnai, Boko, Chaygaon, Palasbari, Jalukbari, Dispur, Gauhati East, Gauhati West, Hajo, and Barkhetry (before delimitation).

Notably, the BJP and the Congress are the predominant parties in this constituency, with BJP securing the seat four times and Congress five times. Since the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat has been consistently won by the BJP.

In the upcoming election, the BJP has nominated Bijuli Kalita Medhi, while the Congress has put forth Mira Borthakur as their candidate for the Guwahati Lok Sabha Constituency.

Winners of Gauhati Lok Sabha Constituency in 2019

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, BJP candidate Queen Oja emerged victorious in the Gauhati seat with a substantial margin of 345,606 votes. Oja secured 1,008,936 votes, garnering a vote share of 57.20%, while her closest competitor, Bobbeeta Sharma of the Congress, received 663,330 votes (37.60%).

The total valid votes polled amounted to 1,763,757, with 10,466 voters (0.59%) opting for NOTA. The overall voter turnout during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections was 80.86%. The Gauhati constituency comprised 2,592 polling stations during the 2019 elections.

According to the results of the 2021 Assembly Election, the AGP holds one MLA, the BJP holds five MLAs, and the Congress has four MLAs representing the Gauhati Lok Constituency.
