Chairman-cum-managing director Khundongbam Palin of Shija Hospitals in Manipur has been listed among the top six surgeons in Insights Care, the best healthcare magazine, in its latest edition of February 2019 titled ‘The Most Proficient Surgeons to Watch out in 2019’,according to a press release.
The other surgeons in the list include Nadeem Nivaz Jan, a consultant surgeon with main domain of interest in vascular surgery, Palin, a general surgeon and plastic surgery specialist, CS Ramachandran, general and laparoscopic surgeon, Deepak Govil, surgical gastroenterologist, Raju Vaishya, orthopaedic surgeon, and Kawita Bapat, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.
Editor’s Note of the magazine states that pursuing surgery as a career is a “daunting task”. Surgeons often get yelled at by the patients’ family and also have to handle backlash of several patients, their families and friends. On numerous instances, doctors have also suffered physical assault owing to this issue.
The magazine states that Palin, an outstanding surgeon and a successful entrepreneur, is set to change the medical conditions for the people of Myanmar. Palin bagged the degree of MBBS from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Manipur, and MS (General Surgery) and MCh (Plastic Surgery) from PGI Chandigarh.
He believes, “Happiness is the only way to happiness. Unhappiness cannot solve our problems except draining our energy and enthusiasm. Unhappiness can be traced to the thinking of painful past experiences or the fear of the future. If we are conscious of our consciousness, we can remove these thoughts and be in the state of no thought but stillness or awareness at present. This is the time when we can innovate and succeed.”
In the seventies, Palin saw that many patients from Manipur went to Dibrugarh and Alipore in Assam and CMC in Vellore for healthcare treatment. He realised people lacked trust in the local healthcare facilities. To rectify this situation, he started Shija Clinic, attached to a pharmacy at Paona Bazar, Imphal, in 1985, with minor operation facility and a side laboratory. Without delay, Shija Clinic became a leader in piles treatment in eastern India by providing non-operative piles treatment facilities. Today, Shija Clinic has become a 250-bed NABH (Pre-Entry) super-specialty hospital boasting of 25 departments with 880 dedicated caregivers and and several other facilities.
