The one of its kind ‘Kishan Bazaar’ for the local organic farmers was inaugurated near Lall Bazaar in Sikkim on Monday.
Somnath Poudyal, Agriculture minister and NK Subba, Urban Development minister inaugurated the market complex constructed by the State government as an exclusive platform for sale of organic farm produces.
Speaking to media, Minister Poudyal said with the inauguration of the Bazaar, the vision to provide a direct selling platform for the growers has been accomplished as part of the second phase of the Sikkim organic mission.
“There were issues coming up from the farmers saying they were unable to get space to sell their products but now that has been resolved. We are sure that the farmers coming to the Kishan Bazaar will get better prices, boost agriculture and improve the living standard of the farmers,” said Poudyal.
Urban Development minister NK Subba stated that the Bazaar construction is not fully complete and there is more to be fulfilled in the seven-storied building located at the Lall Bazaar road entry point.
In the two floors opened for local growers, the facility can accommodate around 200 sellers. There will be no license or any kind of taxes levied on the farmers for selling their products in the bazaar. Similar bazaar would be constructed in several locations across the State in the coming days, minister Subba informed, reports Sikkim Express.
Two under-construction floors above the Kishan Bazaar would have 80 shops selling organic agricultural products and farm inputs.
