cycling corridor

Five new cycling corridors are to be set up in Guwahati under the Smart City Project.

To tackle pollution and the lack of fitness among the urban population, Guwahati is planning to set up corridors in different places to ease cycling activity in the city.

M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) is also the Managing Director of Guwahati smart city board of directors. Angamuthu said, “We plan to create awareness about the benefits of cycling and physical fitness, the smart city project plans to develop a corridor for cycling enthusiasts and ensure their safety. Plans are in the works to develop five cycling tracks around the city.”

Deepor Beel, the Dighali Pukhuri bank and the area close to Shrimanta Shankardev Kalakhetra are leading options for the setting up of the corridors. Angamuthu added.

The cycling corridor project however, is still at its inception as the locations needs to be assessed before granting approval. The corridors are most likely to be developed by restricting vehicular traffic either on certain days of the week or certain times of the day.
