The discourse also covered how the youth today are so very vulnerable to tobacco – both smokeless and smoke laden.

A total of around 150 people including school students and the rural folk attended the day long programme.

The gathered villagers were addressed by Dr Dharomsing Timung, DPO, NCD, Karbi Anglong; Dr Mukul Chakraborty, MD, Kheroni Model Hospital and Jonali Das Choudhury who has been working as a caregiver across the Kamrup district from the last three years.

Despite the heavy rainfall, the people of different villages turned up in sizeable numbers with much needed inquisitiveness as the rural areas these days are equally prone to this life taking disease.

“The cancer these days are more rampant as our food habits are increasingly becoming bad and the ways they are being produced is quite unnatural. In other words we are consuming poison on a daily basis in some form or the other in our foods,” said Dr Dharomsing Timung.

“Cancer is something which has to be dealt with courage and positivity and it has to be treated as any other normal disease so as to defeat it. Cancer succumbs one if he or she gives in,” said caregiver Jonali Das Choudhury.

Vivek Lohia and Neha Sharma of Assam Cancer Care Foundation also talked elaborately about the workings of ACCF with Tata Trusts and how the people living in the rural areas now need not have to go to the big cities to get diagnosed or treated for cancer.

These kinds of awareness campaigns are rare in these parts of the State.

The villages listened to the day-long discourse on this life taking disease with rapt attention.

Beacon, an NGO which works in the western part of Karbi Anglong, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha and Hawaipur HS School played instrumental role in the successful completion of the camp.
