Assam improved a lot in healthcare: NITI Aayog report

Assam has occupied the fifteenth position in NITI Aayog’s ‘Healthy States Progressive India’ report which was released on Tuesday.

The second edition of the report was released by NITI Aayog’s vice chairman Rajiv Kumar.

In order to publish the second edition of the report, the overall performance and incremental improvement in the States and Union territories was examined over a two-year period 2015-16 (Base Year) to 2017-18 (Reference Year).

The health scenario of the states and union territories of India was examined by incorporating 23 indicators which covered key aspects of the health sector performance and then rating the overall performance score which is known as Health Index.

For generation of ranks, the States were classified into three categories -Larger States, Smaller States and Union Territories.

Assam occupied the fifteenth position among the Larger Sates category with an overall health index score of 44.13.

Among the Larger Sates category, the top three states with good Health Index scores include Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Assam along with Haryana and Jharkhand has been stated as ‘Most Improved’ states in upgrading healthcare.

Among the Smaller States, Mizoram ranked first in overall performance with a Health Index Score of 73.70 followed by Manipur and Meghalaya with scores of 57.78 and 55.95.

However, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh fared poorly in health performance among the Smaller States category.
