Various yoga-related events were organized all across the State on Thursday as Arunachal Pradesh joined the rest of the globe to celebrate the 4th International Day of Yoga in a befitting manner.

Attending the celebrations at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), almost 25 km from here, State Governor BD Mishra appealed to the people to inculcate yoga as part of their lifestyle.

The Governor said that many important medico-academic assets of Indian cultural heritage had, during the long foreign rules been suppressed out of practice.

However, on December 11, 2014 at the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, yoga has been adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, with overwhelming support of its 177 members and June 21 has been declared as the International Day of Yoga.

Mishra, who has been practicing yoga for the last forty years, shared his experiences and importance of the ‘physiomental’ wellbeing legacy of yoga. He also explained the important procedural aspects of yoga practice.

While explaining, the procedures of yoga practice, the Governor said that the first stage of yoga is to adopt correct pre-asana position, second, slowly getting to the yoga posture, third, holding the posture for minimum for a minute and maximum for three minutes and fourth, slowly moving out of the posture to pre-asana position.

The Governor, who hails from the Black Commando Organization, said that all top commandos practise yoga and pranayam for concentration, tension free mind and get willpower.

The Governor also appreciated the RGU fraternity for involving and integrating its members in observing the occasion in befitting manner.

He was impressed by the students of physical education department, who conducted the Common Yoga Protocol and presented a group display of ‘yoga-pranayam’ and internal cleansing.

RGU Vice-Chancellor Prof Tamo Mibang, registrar Dr Tomo Riba, faculty members, students and research scholars along with Raj Bhavan officials and school children participated in the celebration.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu also took part in the celebrations of International Day of Yoga here at the headquarters of 1st Battalion of Arunachal Pradesh Police in Chimpu.

The event was also participated by ministers, parliamentary secretaries and other officials.

The Arunachal Police department organized the event with over 300 participants comprising police officers, personnel and their family members who joined the yoga practice session following the common yoga protocol.

The department has also been organizing the month-long wellness programme across 23 districts for the police personnel and their family members culminating in Thursday’s programme.

The CM in his speech commended the State police for organizing the month-long activities of yoga for wellbeing of police officers and their families.

“Along with physical fitness activities, we must also keep our mind under control and healthy. Our mental health is important to wean away emotional weaknesses. Yoga not only keeps us physically fit but also keeps the mind calm, present and mindful. By being mentally and physically fit, we can overcome any negative emotions and have better decision making capability,” Khandu said.

The CM further called upon the Government officials, police personnel and politicians to practise yoga to fight stress developed due to hectic.

He said by maintaining overall psychological well-being, one can raise their capability to work and make themselves more productive.

The CM thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking yoga to the United Nations for making it a world event.

He said more than 170 countries at the UN had supported the motion for celebration of International Day of Yoga.

Khandu also said the date of International Day of Yoga is special because it is the longest day of the year across the northern hemisphere and shortest in southern hemisphere.

Khandu on the occasion also released a souvenir titled ‘Wellness First’ published by the Police Department.

Home Minister Kumar Waii, Chief Secretary Satya Gopal and DGP SBK Singh also spoke on the occasion.

Participating in the celebrations at Indira Gandhi Park on Thursday morning, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein called for introduction of yoga in the schools across State.

Mein while pressing for practice and promotion of yoga by the every individual also advocated for imparting one-month yoga course to the PT teachers of government schools so that they become master trainer and teach yoga in their respective schools after completion of the course.

He said that the PT teachers should further motivate and teach the school children about the importance of yoga and how yoga practice would benefit them physically and mentally to generate interests amongst the students for yoga.

Mein also suggested that the private and residential schools should also be instructed to teach yoga to the boarders in the hostels.

The Deputy CM also lauded and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting yoga in the world platform.

Health & Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang in his speech said that yoga is good for healthy, spiritual and mental wellbeing and called to practise yoga regularly to improve coordination between the body, mind and soul.

“Yoga is for unification and mental peace,” he said.

Capital Complex Deputy Commissioner Prince Dhawan and Health Services director Dr Moromor Lego also spoke on the occasion.

Also present on the occasion were State BJP president Tapir Gao and MLAs Tamar Murtem and Kento Rina.

People from all walks of life including Government employees, personnel from ITBP, CRPF, NCC, school children and public participated in the yoga session organized later in the day by the department of health and family welfare.
