A total of 137 cancer patients and 2 attendants arrived in Guwahati from Mumbai on Tuesday night amid lockdown in view of the COVID19 pandemic.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with the minister of state for health, Pijush Hazarika, received the cancer patients and the attendants at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati.

This was informed by health minister Sarma while sharing a few pictures of their arrival in buses at the stadium on his Twitter handle on Tuesday night.

The cancer patients from various parts of Assam went to Mumbai for treatment.

However, the Assam government decided to bring back these patients in the wake of COVID19 pandemic.

Sarma informed that after screening, the cancer patients and the attendant will be sent for mandatory quarantine as per their wish.

Health minister Sarma tweeted:  “137 cancer patients & 2 attendants have been brought from Mumbai in wake of #COVID19 pandemic. I & @Pijush_hazarika received them at Sarusajai Stadium. After requisite screening they would be sent for quarantine, as per their preferences.”

Health minister Sarma earlier spoke to 95 cancer patients from Assam who remained stranded at the Assam Bhawan in Mumbai due to COVID19 lockdown.

Minister Sarma had a video conference with the patients and assured that the state government would extend the fullest support towards them.

Minister Sarma assured them that the state government would make all the necessary arrangements related to their treatment after their return to the state.

He had urged the cancer patients and their families not to panic but to keep patience.
