Guwahati: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has responded to allegations made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who blamed the university for exacerbating the recent flash floods in Guwahati.

CM Sarma claimed that USTM’s construction had disrupted the natural water flow, leading to severe flooding in the city.

However, USTM responding to the CM’s statement said that it was committed to sustainability and environmental practices, stating that its campus has extensive water harvesting systems and afforestation drives in place.

The university stated that its infrastructure expansions have received proper permissions from the Government of Meghalaya and that its campus contributes only a small fraction of the water flow affecting the surrounding areas.

The university further added that it has invested in green technologies, such as water harvesting systems, groundwater recharging, and solar power generation, and features five large natural water reservoirs designed to capture and store rainwater, contributing to local water conservation efforts.
