Assam Promising start for state boxers

Guwahati: The junior and sub-junior matches of the REC National Open Talent Search Boxing Competition was officially inaugurated on Wednesday at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) regional centre’s indoor stadium in Assam capital Guwahati.

The competition – organised by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) with support of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) – saw four boys from Assam in the sub-junior category advance to the second round and six boys in the junior category win their first-round matches.

On the other hand, in the junior girls’ 44 kg category, Monika Doley of Assam advanced to the second round.

In the junior boys’ 44 kg category, Manasjyoti Bhuyan and Mayurjyoti Kashyap of Assam started their campaign with victories.

While Abhijit and Derhasar Basumatary advanced to the second round in the 46 kg category, Doigin Doikham secured a win in the 54 kg category, and Shubhiraj Pegu claimed victory in the 60 kg category in the first-round matches of the junior boys’ category.

In the sub-junior boys’ 40 kg category, Ayan Saikia and Mohammad Zayan Ahmed of Assam advanced to the second round, while Lunminhu Khongsa won in the 43 kg category and Mihir Musahari claimed victory in the first-round match of the 49 kg category.

Matches of the competition in the elite and youth categories for both men and women were successfully completed earlier.

Assam secured as many as 16 medals across various weight categories in the elite and youth sections, including two gold medals, six silver medals and eight bronze. The competition will conclude on September 30.
