Guwahati: Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU), Guwahati, on Saturday felicitated Hirak Jyoti Sarma, a visiting faculty member in Assamese Language and Assamese Folk Music, for receiving the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2025.
The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is a national award instituted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in memory of renowned shehnai exponent Ustad Bismillah Khan.
It recognises outstanding young artists below the age of 40 for their contributions to music, dance, theatre, and traditional or folk arts.

The felicitation ceremony was attended by teaching and non-teaching staff of the university and witnessed a full-capacity gathering.
During the programme, Sarma also presented a folk music performance.
The event was presided over by Jasoda Ranjan Das, president of the SSA Society. Among those present were Jayanta Deka, Chancellor of Girijananda Chowdhury University; Kandarpa Das, Vice-Chancellor; and Dipankar Saha, Registrar.
Deans of the Schools of Engineering and Technology, Management and Commerce, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, and the Centre for Legal Studies also attended the event.
