Assam Promising start for state boxers

Guwahati: As many as 17 boys and girls from Assam have so far entered the quarterfinals in various weight categories of the junior and sub-junior divisions in the ongoing REC National Open Talent Search Boxing Championship in Guwahati.

All the boxers have secured a place in the national final round competition by successfully reaching the last eight.

While Anju Kumar Suman and Prashant Rajbangshi have advanced to the quarterfinals in the boys’ junior 44 kg category, Mohammad Afruzur has secured a spot in the quarterfinals in the 48 kg category.

In the girls’ junior division, Rongdha Patgiri in the 44 kg category and Kum Kum Bora in the 54 kg category have secured their places in the quarterfinals.

On the other hand, in the sub-junior girls’ category, Priyanka in 40 kg, and Shreya, Shini Hazarika, Riya Boro and Devika Gohain in the 43 kg category have entered the quarterfinals.

In the sub-junior boys’ category, Abhi Thapa and Ahan Thapa in 37 kg, Mohammad Zayan Ahmed in 40 kg, Gourangajyoti Dihingia and Saimon Chettri in 43 kg, Rajani Das in 46 kg, and Prashant Hazarika in the 52 kg category have qualified for the last eight.

Prior to this, the men’s and women’s elite and youth divisions of the competition were successfully held. Assam won a total of 16 medals in various weight categories in the elite and youth divisions, including two gold, six silver and eight bronze medals.

The competition – organised by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) in collaboration with Boxing Federation of India (BFI) – will conclude on September 30.

Every boxer who has reached the quarterfinals in the competition will qualify to compete in the national final round. Additionally, the medal-winning boxers will receive prize money.
