Efforts are on to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam under the direct monitoring of the Supreme Court and a huge amount of money has also been spent in the project so that an error-free NRC comes up. The first draft NRC was published in the midnight of December 31, 2017.

But there are several errors found in the spellings of the names of Indian citizens in the draft NRC which on the one hand has become a matter of humour and on the other hand, the people concerned are worried over their future.

All over the Barak Valley, there are a number of cases where errors have occurred in the spellings of the names of many citizens.

In such a case, the name of one ‘Tarak Paul’ has been published in the draft NRC as “Tar Kopal”. This error ‘has changed the meaning of the original name. In Bengali, ‘Tar Kopal’ means ‘his or her fate’. Error like ‘Tar Kopal’ has already become a matter of humour all over Barak.

On the other hand, the name of one Jhontu Das has been published as Jontu Das (?????). As written in Bangla alphabet, ‘Jontu’ means beast or animal. This kind of error has made the name holder nervous and those, whose names have been published with errors in the draft NRC, have blamed the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for the errors.

Though most of the BLOs have claimed that they have enlisted the citizens’ names correctly but such errors have exposed the irresponsibility on the part of a section of BLOs. Interestingly, the Local Registrars of Citizens Registration (LRCRs) of the NRC Seva Kendra concerned are not sure how the errors would be corrected in the final NRC.

Meanwhile, there are also many cases where the titles of citizens have been changed in the first draft NRC. While the title Chakraborty has been changed as Bhattacharjee, Dev has been changed as Dey, Biswas as Dev, Laskar has been changed as Barvuian. The citizens concerned have urged the government to take the matter seriously and get the names corrected.
