International Day of Action for Rivers is observed on March 14th of every year. It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of rivers and taking action to protect them.

The idea of celebrating the International Day of Action for Rivers emerged in March 1997 at the First International Meeting of People Affected by Dams in Curitiba, Brazil.

A gathering brought together representatives from 20 different countries concerned about the impact of dams on rivers, water resources, and surrounding ecosystems.

They decided to designate March 14th, which already coincided with Brazil’s Day of Action Against Large Dams, as the International Day of Action for Rivers.

Significance of the International Day of Action for Rivers

The theme for 2024 is “Water for All,” highlighting the essential right of everyone to have access to clean water. Rivers are vital for our planet’s health, providing fresh water for drinking, irrigation, and ecosystems.
