A wild elephant trampled a woman to death at Borlengri under Khatkhati Police Station in Karbi Anglong district.
The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Meena Munda.
The incident took place in the morning at 5:30 am on Thursday.
According to reports, the incident took place when Munda was escorting some guests from her home in the morning.
As there was a lot of fog, she could not see the wild elephant on the road.
The elephant all of a sudden attacked her and trampled her to death on the spot.
The forest department officials and police reached the spot and took the body for conducting post-mortem to Diphu Medical College Hospital.
The victim is survived by her husband and five children.
Incidents of man-elephant conflict have increased in the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong in recent years.
The reason has been identified as deforestation and destruction of the habitat of the wild elephants.
The wild elephants come out in search of food and many a time come in contact with humans in the two hill districts.
Incidents of wild elephants attacking homes and particularly parget paddy fields in Kheroni area in West Karbi Anglong and Bokajan sub-division of Karbi Anglong district continue to be reported.
