Doomdooma: Two leopard cubs, a male and a female aged around two to three months, were rescued by the Forest Department near a residential area in Assam’s Margherita, Tinsukia district, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) said on Saturday.
The cubs were rescued this week in the Margherita East Range under the Digboi Forest Division.
WTI shared the information on social media on Friday.
An adult female leopard had been sighted earlier in the same locality and was later released into Dehing Patkai National Park.
Suspecting that she might be the mother of the cubs, the Forest Department tried to reunite them. However, the attempt was unsuccessful.
The two cubs are now under the care of the IFAW-WTI Mobile Veterinary Service UnitโEastern Assam (MVS-EA). The unit works with the Assam Forest Department and receives support from the Ashrayhasta Trust.
Leopards can live in different environments, including areas close to human settlements. However, cubs are particularly vulnerable when separated from their mothers. Encounters between people and wildlife can also pose risks to both.
Forest officials said the two cubs would require specialised care and appropriate wildlife management measures.
