With an initiative to make Silchar free from garbage, a pilot project involving six wards of this town in Assam based on Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) under the stewardship of its Project Director, C Srinavasan, has started to yield results.
An SLRM unit opened up in Silchar with garbage collected twice a day from households and other business establishments, paved the way for first consignment of recycled waste sold off at a price of Rs one lakh to a vendor on Thursday.

Flagging off the consignment by MP from Silchar, Dr Rajdeep Roy, deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, Aminul Haque Laskar, MLA of Silchar, Dilip Kumar Paul, project director C Srinavasan, laid bare the need to set up similar SLRM units in other parts of the town to get rid of garbage and convert is as valuable ‘resources’.
Apart from a conscious effort by the district administration and Silchar Municipal Board, many NGOs and self-help groups have come forward to help this town reach its goal of SwachhaSundor Silchar (SSS) by 2020.
Speaking on this occasion, deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, Aminul Haque Laskar informed that a whole hearted effort by every resident of this town can help us turning garbage into gold.

He even declared to donate a sum of Rs two lakhs from his fund for this noble cause.
MP Silchar, Dr Rajdeep Roy, who had already donated Rs seven lakhs from his MP LAD fund for making this project viable and Silchar clean and green, said, “Today morning I saw a message from a friend from Dibrugarh that Silchar falls under eighth most littered town in India as per a national survey.”
“Anyways, such figures can make us remind as to what we should do to come out of it and make this town free from garbage and wastes,” said Dr Roy.
Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Laya Madduri, informed the gathering that very shortly another SLRM unit would be opened up in Rangirkhari area of this town for taking forward this pilot project to its final conclusion.
