Guwahati: Shillong is set to host Northeast Indiaโs first major international stand-up comedy event on Friday evening, with comedian Russell Peters performing to a sold-out audience at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture.
Peters arrived in the city earlier in the day and spent time exploring local sights ahead of his 6 p.m. show. Organisers have advised attendees to arrive by 5 p.m. to access food stalls and beverages, citing high demand at the venue.
The performance marks the only Northeast stop in Petersโ ongoing India tour. Known for his observational humour and cross-cultural narratives, he has performed to packed venues across North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
The event is being seen as another milestone in Shillongโs emergence as a major live entertainment destination. Over the past decade, the city has built a reputation as Indiaโs โmusic hubโ, hosting events such as the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival and attracting international performers. The show also follows a week of major live events, including a prominent rock concert, contributing to a surge in cultural tourism.
Event organiser Jason Manners of Rockski said, โFor the first time, audiences here are experiencing a global stand-up comedy icon performing live in the region, and the response has been phenomenal with a sold-out show. Shillong is truly coming into its own as a destination where world-class entertainment meets an incredible audience.โ
Peters said he was impressed by the cityโs atmosphere. โIโve heard a lot about Shillong, and Iโm really enjoying the vibe here already. Iโm looking forward to the show tonight; itโs always special performing in a new place, especially one with such great energy,โ he said.
Meghalaya Tourism Director Brenda Pakyntein said the event reflects the growing appeal of the State as a cultural destination. โMeghalaya continues to grow as a hub for cultural and entertainment tourism. Hosting a globally renowned artist like Russell Peters and seeing such an overwhelming response reflects the strong appetite for international live experiences in the state,โ she said.
