On November 25, the Assam government had signed the MOU with the Times Group to host 65th Filmfare Awards 2020 in Guwahati.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had said after the MOU that hosting of the prestigious event would help take Assam to the national stage and showcase it as ‘one of the most attractive tourist destinations in India’.

Vineet Jain, Managing Director of Times Group, who was present for the signing of the MOU, had said they decided to bring the Filmfare Awards to Guwahati is to ‘diversify’ its reach.

The awards were first instituted in 1954. It was initially referred to as the Clare Awards or The Clares, named after Clare Mendonca, the editor of The Times of India.

A dual voting system was developed in 1956. Nominees are voted by both the public and a committee of film industry experts.
