A Bhaona, staged by the teaching and non-teaching staff of Lakhimpur Girls’ College, mesmerised the audience of North Lakhimpur town on Sunday night.

The Bhaona, titled Kurusandhya, based on the tales from the Mahabharata, was directed by Baliram Nath, president of the cultural wing of the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, Lakhimpur district.

Bhaona, a creation of Assam’s Vaishnavite saint, Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva, is a traditional form of entertainment with religious messages.

It was created in the early sixteenth century.

Prior to the staging of the Bhaona, the principal of Lakhimpur Girls College, Dr. Surajeet Bhuyan delivered the welcome address before a packed audience counted to be more than fifteen hundred.

Terming the unique creation of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, five centuries ago, Dr Bhuyan stressed the importance of the efforts by teachers in bringing the great tradition to the new generation.

The Bhaona was acted by the teachers of the girls’ college, Robin Kakati, Ratna Chutia, Dr Bhupen Chutia, Hirannya Sabhapandit, Dr Mridul Buragohain, Dr Lohit Hazarika, Dulen Gogoi, Jayantajeet Bordoloi and many others.

Child actor Devakalpa Baruah performed the role of the Sutradhar in the Bhaona.

The president and secretary of the organizing committee, Dr Upen Pujari and Dr MH Abdus Sahid, respectively offered votes of thanks to the audience at the end of the programme.
