Netflix’s crime drama series Delhi Crime, directed by Indian-Canadian director Richie Mehta, won the best drama series honour at the 48th International Emmy Awards.

The news has been confirmed by Assam-born renowned actor Adil Hussain.

Taking to Twitter, Adil Hussain said: “Delhi Crime #DelhiCrime wins the Emmy @iemmys International Awards for Best Drama. Congratulations @RichieMehta unmatchable @ShefaliShah dearest @rajeshtailang and whole team Big Big Congratulations!”

The crime drama series, which has been written by Richie Mehta, has actors Adil Hussain, Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, and Rajesh Tailang as cast members.

The first two episodes of the series were premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in the Indie Episodic category.

The series was released on Netflix on March 22, 2019.

The series is set in the aftermath of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape.

The series deconstructs the case of the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who was gang-raped in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012 before she was thrown to die on a Delhi road.

She died in a Singapore hospital after a fortnight.

While Shefali Shah played Vartika Chaturvedi, whose character on the series was based on former Delhi Police DCP Chaya Sharma, who was able to crack the case of gang-rape within 72 hours.

The series has received massive acclaim for its sensitive retelling of a horrific crime that shook the entire nation.

According to a media report, India’s two other Emmy nominations included Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Four More Shots’ and Arjun Mathur for his role in drama ‘Made in Heaven’ in the best comedy and actor categories respectively.

The performances by the ensemble cast of the drama including Adil Hussain, Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal and Rajesh Tailang were particularly appreciated, said the report.
