Former professor in the English department of Cotton College (now Cotton University) Basanta Barua, popularly known as ‘Manipuri’, breathed his last in Guwahati on Wednesday morning.

He was 92 years old at the time of his demise.

A resident of Chenikuthi in Guwahati, left for the heavenly abode at 11.30 pm at the residence of his elder daughter at Sundarpur in the city.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, sons-in-law, three grandchildren and a host of well-wishers.

Due to old age ailments, he was staying at the residence of his elder daughter.

His mortal remains have been taken to Nabagrah Cremation Ground for performing last rites.

Basanta Barua was born in 1927.

Starting his primary education at Chenikuthi Primary School, Barua cleared his matriculation from Cotton Collegiate High School in Guwahati.

He then took admission in Cotton College.

At the time of pursuing education in Cotton College, Barua also participated in the Indian freedom movement.

Barua, who graduated from Cotton College in English (Honours), also did postgraduation in the same subject.

After earning MA degree, Barua joined MC College in Barpeta as a lecturer in English subject.

Later he went to Calcutta University in 1956 and earned double MA in English.

Then he went to Lady Keane College in Shillong for teaching.

However, after a brief period, he joined Cotton College as a lecturer and retired from the same college.

After his demise, a pall of gloom has descended in Chenikuthi area.
