As many as 23 colleges affiliated to Bodoland University (BU) were caught in confusion as a decision was taken to de-affiliate several colleges functioning under the University.

After thorough inspection, authorities found that Bodoland University did not fulfil certain criteria and hence cannot be granted university status. The decision to de-affiliate 23 colleges functioning under BU and re-affiliate them to Gauhati University came after the inspection.

Several students were caught in the mayhem as the colleges are being re-affiliated to Gauhati University, which caused confusion regarding the semester examination that was to be held in December.

Principal of Bengtal College, Ranjit Kumar Narzary, located in Bodo Territorial Area Districts (BTAD), which is one of the colleges to be affiliated back to Gauhati University said, “Bodoland University does not meet the criteria mentioned in 12(B) as per the UGC Act of 1956.”

Article 12(B) of the UGC Act states that no grants would be given to a university if it is declared unfit to receive such grants.”

After it was set up, Bodoland University became an affiliating University and therefore many colleges within the geographical area were de-afiliated from Gauhati University and was affiliated to Bodoland University, authorities informed.

According to a source, BU has a different syllabus than GU. The students of BU will now have to follow the syllabus issued by GU, and will continue to do so from the next semester onwards. The syllabus of GU is relatively difficult than the one followed by BU. The students are currently not allowed to sit for the examinations. The semester examinations which are usually scheduled in December will now be held during the third week of February or in the month of March.

A senior professor from Gauhati University said that the situation has become very chaotic since the other colleges have rejoined. She also expressed distress over the matter that questions will now have to be set from their pre existing syllabus and as a result examinations being delayed.

Deputy Director of Higher Education department, Jayanta Thakuria said that the State Government cannot offer any remedial measures in this matter as the decision has been made at the University level.
