Acting on a tip-off, the Pragjyotishpur Police led by Purabi Mazumdar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Noonmati Division, Guwahati, on Wednesday arrested a faculty member of Assam Down Town University for being allegedly involved in a cash-for-result scam in the university.

The 36-year-old accused has been identified as Gunajit Choudhury, a faculty member of the Department of Paramedical Sciences of Assam Down Town University.

According to police sources, the accused, a resident of Kahilipara area in Guwahati, who had been absconding, was arrested from Panikhaiti area in Guwahati at around 3 pm on Wednesday.

The officer-in-charge of the Pragjyotishpur Police Station, Mridul Hazarika told Northeast Now, “We had been following him for the past few days. Finally, based on a tip-off, we nabbed him today from Panikhaiti area.”

As per reports, some passed-out students and some faculty members of the university had been allegedly running the cash-for-result scam.

The university authority, on suspicion lodged an FIR at the Pragjyotishpur Police Station on June 25, 2018.

Talking to Northeast Now, ACP Purabi Mazumdar said, “We had been searching for the absconder after the FIR was lodged by the university authority on June 25.”

Earlier, on June 29, the Pragjyotishpur Police led by ACP Mazumdar with the help of the Pathsala Police arrested one accused in the same case from Barpeta while he was travelling from Howly to Pathsala in Barpeta district.

The 28-year-old accused has been identified as Jal Nur Uddin Ahmed, who hails from Barpeta.

As per police sources, he was produced in the court of District Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) on June 30.

Mazumdar said, “The accused, Jal Nur Uddin Ahmed, is now under police remand for seven days. He passed out from the university in 2015. During interrogation, he confessed that their target was the students who were weak in study or failed in examinations. Both the accused lured the students to fetch them good marks in the examinations and pass by charging huge amount of money. Ahmed also confessed that he had been involved in the cash-for-result scam since 2015.”

The ACP also said, “There may be more persons involved in the scam. We are investigating the case.”

Accused Gunajit Choudhury would be produced before the court of District Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) on July 5.

A case (No 133/18) under Sections 120B and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused at Pragjyotishpur Police Station.
