In a bid to push their demands, the teachers of government primary schools of Bhergaon sub-division under Udalguri district took to the streets boycotting classes and staged ‘Jail Bharo’ protest at Bhergaon on Tuesday.

The teachers under the banner of Bhergaon Sub-division Lower Primary Teachers’ Association took out the protest holding placards from Bogribari Primary School to Bhergaon SDO(C) office demanding fulfillment of their various issues.

The issues which have been plaguing the primary schools of Bhergaon Sub-division in Udalguri district include pending approvals of recruited teachers, discrepancy in wages of teachers, distribution of adequate books among Bodo medium students among others.

The teachers also submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the office of Bhergaon SDO(C).

Through the memorandum, the Bhergaon Sub-division Lower Primary Teachers’ Association demanded remuneration of Rs. 8,700 for the lower primary teachers according to the 7th Pay Committee’s recommendations, creation of the post of head master, recruitment of adequate number of teachers, supply of Bodo medium textbooks, barring teachers from duties of other non-teaching works among others.

It may be mentioned that in November last year, the students of Shekar Sankardeva Mission High School, Dimakuchi in Udalguri which falls under Khoirabari Educational Block in Udalguri district carried out a protest rally demanding appointment of teachers in their school.

The students of the school, who have been facing problems in their study due to acute shortage of teaching staff took to streets to draw the attention of the Assam government on the occasion of the Children’s Day in 2018.
