Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has been named as one of the world’s top universities for the study of the subjects of Data Science and Petroleum Engineering.

The IIT Guwahati’s achievement is based on the latest edition of the world’s most-consulted university ranking.

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education analytics firm, named the world’s best universities for the study of 55 academic disciplines. IIT Guwahati has excelled particularly in Data Science, securing a global ranking of 51-70 and Petroleum Engineering, where it ranks 51-100 globally.

Additionally, the premier institute has achieved commendable rankings in broad subject areas such as Engineering & Technology with a rank of 210, as compared to a rank of 222 in 2023, Natural Science with a rank of 343, as compared to a rank of 379 the same year, and Arts & Humanities with the rank 510-550.

Moreover, IIT Guwahati has been ranked in the Arts & Humanities category for the first time for Business & Management Studies and Agriculture & Forestry.

Speaking on the achievement, the Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof Rajeev Ahuja, said he is proud that the institute has emerged as a global leader in the field of education and research.

“I am very proud of IIT Guwahati’s continued recognition as a global leader in education and research in multiple subjects. The exceptional rankings in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering, along with the institute’s overall advancements across various disciplines and subjects reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation,” Prof Ahuja said.

“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our faculty, staff and students, inspiring us to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge and making meaningful contributions to society. Moving forward, the institute aspires to further improve its position in the rankings in the coming years,” he added.

On the other hand, as many as four subjects of IIT Guwahati have also witnessed an improvement in rank this year, which includes Chemistry- from rank 301-250 in the year 2023 to 251-300 in 2024, Biological Sciences- from rank 451-500 last year to 401-450 this year, Environmental Studies- from rank 301-350 last year to 201-250 this year, and Economic & Econometrics- from rank 501-530 last year to 451-500 this year.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 includes Music as a new academic discipline. Notably, QS employs five key metrics to compile the subject rankings, including reputation indicators based on surveys of academics and employers, citations per paper, H-Index and international research network.

Established in 1994, IIT Guwahati completed 25 years of existence in 2019. The institute at present has eleven departments, nine interdisciplinary academic centres and five schools covering all the major engineering, science, healthcare, management and humanities disciplines.

The IIT Guwahati offers Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Bachelor of Design (BDes), Bachelor of Science Honours (BSc Hons), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Design (MDes), Masters of Technology (MTech), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Science-Research (MS-R), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. The institute offers a residential campus to 439 faculty members and over 8,600 students.

The institute has retained the seventh position among the best engineering institutions of India and ninth position in both the Overall and Research categories in the India Rankings 2023 declared by the Union Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

Among other frontier areas of research and innovation, IIT Guwahati is working towards augmenting critical science research initiatives in Genomics, Developmental Biology, Health Care and Bioinformatics, and Flexible Electronics, among numerous other areas.
