Dr. Prabhakar, author of The Crooked Timber of New India, delved into the multi-faceted challenges currently facing India's democratic and constitutional framework.

Guwahati: Noted political economist and commentator Dr. Parakala Prabhakar held a compelling interactive session on 16th December at Girijananda Chowdhury University in Assam, focusing on what he termed “The Crisis of the Indian Republic,” drawing a large and engaged audience of students, academics, and concerned citizens.

Dr. Prabhakar, author of The Crooked Timber of New India, delved into the multi-faceted challenges currently facing India’s democratic and constitutional framework.

His address highlighted concerns across the political, economic, and social spheres, arguing that the fundamental principles upon which the Republic was founded are currently under strain.

Dr. Prabhakar asserted that the Republic is facing a crisis because it is moving away from its foundational principles. He pointed to the chronic mismanagement of the economy, which has resulted in widespread inequalities, particularly due to high unemployment rates and rising inflation. Beyond the economy, the discussion pivoted to the erosion of democratic norms. Dr. Prabhakar expressed deep concern over what he described as a weakening of institutions and a growing disregard for constitutional values.

The interactive format allowed for a lively Q&A session, where students posed probing questions about the role of youth and media in addressing the crisis. Dr. Prabhakar stressed the importance of active and informed citizenship to safeguard the Republic. He concluded by stating that the future of the Republic depends on the vigilance of its citizens and making a call for renewed commitment to India’s secular and democratic foundations.
