The Manipur University community continued to stage relay hunger strike at the gate of the university on Friday amid appeal by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to call off the strike in public interest.

The day’s relay hunger strike was joined by prominent leaders of political parties including the opposition and communist parties after police prevented a proposed silent rally organised to support the ongoing agitation in Manipur University, at Kakwa bazaar, 5 km south of Imphal.

Meanwhile, granting leave for 30 days to Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey of Manipur University amid demand for his removal over alleged financial and administrative irregularities evoked sharp reaction from the university teachers and staffs bodies.

Reacting to the order, a Manipur University Teachers Association functionary said that the varsity community opposed the move of the authority.  Manipur University Staffs’ Association also shared a similar sentiment.

The academic activities at the central university have been under suspension since May 30 after Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) launched indefinite shutdown demanding removal of Prof Pandey. President Jibankumar of Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA) said the order was “contradictory” to the service rules.

On Thursday, Registrar in-charge M Shyamkesho Singh of the Manipur University issued an order to grant leave for one month from August 2, 2018 to Prof Pandey as authorized by the HRD Ministry.

As per the statute 2(6) of the Manipur University Act, 2005, the senior most Professor shall perform the duties of the VC if the office of the VC becomes vacant, the order said. W Vishwanath Singh was the senior-most professor.

Meanwhile, the District Magistrate of Imphal West district has enforced prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC  in the revenue area of Imphal West district to prohibit any form of rallies or procession except that of customary and religious objections from 1 pm of Friday.
