Singapore Airlines have been invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to start operations in Guwahati. The city has the potential to become an important hub of connectivity with ASEAN nations.
PM Modi is expected to visit Singapore in June to attend the flagship program Shangri-La Dialogue.

Speaking to the media, Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs Preeti Saran, “Prime Minister has been invited for the Shangri-La Dialogue as the chief guest. Prime Minister has accepted the invitation. He will be visiting in June.”
While briefing about the bilateral parleys between PM Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, she said India has always attached great importance to Singapore. Moreover in 2018, Singapore is also the Chair of the ASEAN.
Lee Hsien Loong is India to attend the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit and to be Guest of Honour with nine other ASEAN nation heads for the grand Republic Day celebrations on Friday.

PM Modi appreciated Singapore’s role in cementing greater ties between India and ASEAN as a bloc, during bilateral talks.
Earlier this year, Singapore hosted a Pravasi Bharati Diwas; which saw overwhelming participation of the Indian diaspora from all ten ASEAN countries.
Both the leaders also spoke about cashless economy and discussed means to evolve some transaction norms for Indian Rupee and Singapore currency and also about enhancing cooperation in the civil aviation sector.
