Manipur Fisheries Department sets new target to increase production

The State Fisheries Department of Manipur has set a target to increase the table fish production up to 45,000 tonnes per annum as part of the three-year Action Document for 2017-18 to 2019-20 to increase good quality fish seed production up to 300 million by constructing fish seed hatcheries.

Director of Fisheries Department, David K Shimray disclosed this while addressing media during the ongoing series of Press Conference of Heads of Department on Monday in Imphal.

Highlighting the Annual Administrative Report 2017-18 of the Department along with the Vision Document under sustainable development goals for about 15 years for the period up to 2032, Director David also spoke on the ten different state plan schemes namely, direction and administration, inland fisheries development, fish processing, preservation, marketing, craft and gear, fisheries research, extension and transfer of technology, fisheries training, assistance to pisciculturists, establishment of FFDAs and other centrally sponsored schemes.

The total budget of all the 10 schemes amounted to Rs 3552.47 lakhs, he stated. The Action Document also includes creation of 10,000 hatcheries.

He further pointed out that the main objectives behind the Action Document is to uplift the socio-economic condition of fishermen by enhancing catch per unit effort and productivity of ponds and generate self-employment for around 5000 fresh educated youths of Manipur.

Additional Director E Sulochana Devi of Fisheries Department said that the Vision for Seven Year Strategy from 2017-18 to 2023-34 mainly includes development and conservation of indigenous fisheries, creation of cold chain, increasing fish seed production up to 450 million and fish seed stocked in natural water up to 80 lakhs and extension of both financial and technical assistance to fish farmers, women fish vendors & fisher-folks.

Joint Director H Biramani Singh of Fisheries Department said that they are also focussing not only on the long-term plans but the annual plans on a short term basis that includes fisheries infrastructure development fund in collaboration with NABARD.
