Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of entrenched corruption and calling for an investigation into his reported ties with businessman Shyamkanu Mahanta during a rally held on Friday, April 3.
Speaking at a large rally in Sarupathar, Golaghat, Gogoi backed Congress candidate Jiban Chutia and claimed the BJP-led administration has created a system that benefits a select few while ordinary residents face difficulties. He described the arrangement as a network operating under political protection.
Gogoi also challenged the BJPโs record on development, pointing out that despite nearly a decade in office, issues like unemployment, rising living costs, and weak public services persist. He said that numerous government programs still do not reach the people they are meant to support.
The APCC president questioned the Chief Ministerโs use of official platforms, noting that some statements and actions have undermined the dignity of his position. According to Gogoi, such conduct weakens both governance and accountability.
He promised that a Congress government would act swiftly to break up the alleged syndicate network within 100 days and conduct a thorough probe into corruption claims, including those involving Shyamkanu Mahanta.
Targeting the BJPโs governance style, Gogoi argued that power has been concentrated among a small group, sidelining local voices.
He stressed that Congress would pursue inclusive decision-making and ensure welfare schemes are distributed fairly across all communities.
Gogoi also raised other public concerns, including unresolved border disputes, inflation, and the governmentโs inability to address urgent societal issues.
