Dibrugarh: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal, campaigned for BJP candidates Suren Phukan in Digboi and Sanjoy Kishan in Makum during the ongoing assembly elections in Assam.
Speaking at campaign events, Sonowal noted public participation and discussed the partyโs governance record.
At a rally in Balijan, Digboi, he cited infrastructure developments, including roads, bridges, healthcare, education, electricity, and drinking water, along with central schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Ujjwala, as part of the administrationโs initiatives over the past decade.
Referring to public response, Sonowal said, โThe scale of public participation and enthusiasm clearly indicates that we are moving towards a decisive mandate for a third term.โ
He also mentioned production increases at the Digboi Refinery and referred to coordination between the central and state governments to support development projects across Assam, including rural connectivity, access to tea garden areas, and transport infrastructure.
During the campaigns, he criticised previous administrations for issues such as corruption, mismanagement, and leakage of welfare benefits, and said that recent government initiatives, including free foodgrain distribution and the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme, were intended to address these concerns and improve coverage.
Describing Kishan as a โgrassroots leader with a social connect,โ Sonowal said electing him as the first MLA of the newly formed Makum constituency would โstrengthen its development trajectory.โ
Senior BJP leaders also thanked voters for backing the party in the last Lok Sabha elections and requested continued support for BJP candidates in the current assembly polls.
